Strawberries with fresh cream are considered the traditional English summer scene. The large fruits we know today are the result of a chance crossing in the USA during the 19th century. Before that, only the tiny wild varieties, such as Alpine Strawberries were cultivated commercially in Europe. Although small, these Strawberries are extremely fragrant and full of flavor.
The summer fruiting strawberry is by far the most popular group. Cropping time is between May and July, as only a few varieties produce a second crop.
